Tuesday’s Iphigénie
I arrived at the theatre last night only to be greeted with the news that Kresimir Spicer, (our Oreste) was suffering from a sinus infection, and was worried that it might compromise his performance. I dislike making announcements regarding illness to an audience, as I take it for granted they will then hear evidence of [...]
Iphigénie en Tauride: Sublime Perfection from Opera Atelier by Brian Hay
This production was as close to being perfect as a production can be. The work itself (by Christoph Willibald Gluck) is obscure but seeing it presented proves that it shouldn’t be. The story (adapted by François Guillard) has all the elements of a classical Greek Tragedy. Much of the music Gluck wrote for it is [...]
There’s something appealing about large swaths of silk – by Kimberly Barber
There’s something appealing about large swaths of silk billowing across the stage–in this case it looked like rivers of deep red blood, setting up the scene nicely for the cascade of bloodshed to follow (whether on or off-stage). A sweet note from Ruth and Irene Tandberg
Dear Opera Atelier, My mother and I have subscribed to your opera for years and so thoroughly enjoyed every production. Iphigénie en Tauride is your crown, it is, very simply, so very beautiful in every respect. I thank you for bringing us such joy. Ruth and Irene Tandberg
Two shows down…
Two show down and I still feel like the most fortunate director in the world. The performances of Iphigénie become riskier and more thrilling every time the singers and dancers step onto the stage. The singers are delivering their “lines” with such freedom, Tafelmusik practically has to read their minds – and they do! I [...]
The posts are rolling in! Thank you A. Clancy

Opening night for one subscriber…
The performance of Iphigénie en Tauride on opening night was a very moving experience. The dances were sublime, the scrim was beautiful as were the sets, and the singers sang and acted with great distinction. Thomas MacLeay and Cassandra Warner’s are great discoveries, they equalled the wonderful Peggy Kriha Dye and Kresimir Spicer. Myra Nan [...]
