Jeannette and I are back in Toronto and our experience at the Salzburg Festival feels like some sort of marvelous dream. The production of Mozart’s Lucio Silla, which Marc Minkowski invited me to direct and Jeannette to choreograph, enjoyed a success beyond our wildest dreams. There are already some spectacular offers for the production to tour.
The number of hours that the singers put into rehearsal was truly unbelievable.
On the day of our final piano tech rehearsal they rehearsed for 8 hours, finished at 10:30pm and were sitting in make-up at 9:30am the next day preparing for an afternoon dress rehearsal. All of them were in radiant health, superb voice, and full of energy. The energy never lagged – it only increased with each performance – and we are all anxiously awaiting the opportunity to present this glorious work next week in Bremen, Germany. I leave middle of next week following our Persée singer workshop.
It seems our lives at the moment are immersed in Mozart, having just finished The Magic Flute, then moved onto Lucio Silla and next, we prepare for Opera Atelier’s thrilling production of Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio – which opens in 10 weeks!
