Opera Atelier’s new season will feature two fully-staged livestreamed productions at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning. These performances will replace our original programming of The Magic Flute, and our double bill of The Angel Speaks and Dido & Aeneas.
Our Season of Visions and Dreams begins with “Something Rich & Strange"– a new creation which takes its name from the famous quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Rich & Strange will focus on theatre music that explores the realms of dreams, visions and the supernatural, as expressed by Handel, Lully, Locke and Purcell, plus a new creation by Edwin Huizinga for soprano Measha Brueggergosman. Huizinga’s composition is based on Rilke’s poem titled Annunciation, for which Opera Atelier has commissioned a new English translation by American Author and Playwright Grace Andreacchi. Rich & Strange will be fully-staged and costumed and will be livestreamed from Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre on October 28, 2020. In the event we are allowed to welcome audience members to the theatre, subscribers will be given first opportunity to attend.
Something Rich & Strange will feature:
Colin AINSWORTH, Mireille ASSELIN, Measha BRUEGGERGOSMAN, Christopher ENNS, Edwin HUIZINGA, Danielle MACMILLAN, Cynthia SMITHERS, Artists of Atelier Ballet and a select group of musicians from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra led by Music Director Elisa CITTERIO.
For our season’s second offering, we are thrilled to bring you Handel’s The Resurrection as our spring production for the 2020-2021 season. It was heartbreaking for us to have to cancel this new production last spring, and we are delighted to be able to share it with you now. The Resurrection will be livestreamed from Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre on April 1, 2021. In the event that we are able to welcome audience members to the theatre, our subscribers will have first access.
The Resurrection will feature:
