Jeannette and I have returned from a marvelous experience in Versailles where we staged and choreographed Marc Antoine Charpentier's liturgical masterpiece, David et Jonathas. The performance took place in the Royal Chapel, designed by Mansard for Louis XIV - a first in the history of that glorious building.

What with a set designed by Antoine and Roland Fontaine, costumes by the legendary Christian Lacroix and an extraordinary group of artists, it was an opening like no other in our lives. A performance that seemed like a hallucination.... Nothing seemed real from the first chords of Charpentier's searing overture, straight through to the standing ovation at the end. An over-sold-out house seemed to know at once that something extraordinary was about to take place, and our performers responded in kind. These dear exhausted artists had rehearsed three days in a row with full orchestra, costume, and makeup. They opened not having had a break - but delivered performances that astonished all of us. A standing, cheering ovation that went on for so long - our carefully rehearsed bows fell apart entirely!
